There's a guide to the identification of the more common invertebrates in NZ on the Landcare Research site at;

Also on the site are links to other resources including the
NZ Arthropod Collection (NZAC)
in which you can find information abou the type specimens of many taxa including
images of NZ Lepidoptera type specimens
