I've just had this interesting site shown to me -
http://koordinates.comBasically it has a heap of geodata layers that one can add to your map. The layers are vector-based and are varied. Everything from forest cover to pa sites to phone box and shipwreck locations - most of which are free. You can build up your own map and save it for others to view.
At first we had trouble working out how to view the map. When you click on data type it shows you a small map that illustrates what it's about, but if you click on the "add" button it adds it to a larger map that can be accessed via the little tabs ("Show sidebar" and "Show fullscreen") on the right hand side of the screen.
The downsides of the system at this time are that you don't seem to be able to print the maps and that the features are often not named.
