Question on nesting ~ Kereru
« on: April 23, 2009, 08:53:06 AM »
We have several kereru who remain around our 5 acre native bush property..... we have also noticed kereru flying across the Wade River to the Weiti forest (usually in the early evening).

About two weeks ago I saw three kereru flying together, one landed in an old pine tree while the other two carried on......I wondered at the time whether there could be further nesting going on. Also around this time I noticed that Kahu was back, he had made regular excursions across the river during the Jan-early March period but we had not seen him since then. However, in the last two weeks he is back making his sweeps over our bush and again I have noticed that kereru take to the air during his presence. This morning, around 7am, he was back again and I noticed a kereru take flight.

My question..... is it possible that kereru are nesting again? Or, is kahu just being opportunist?

Kereru continue to be seen daily around our 5 acre property, today I saw two together in one of our big old puriri ~ they then flew off together and seemed to head to a kahikatea....a pair?

To answer my question I found this on the following website.....

 http://www.wildaboutnz.co.nz/index.php?view=article&catid=31%3Abirds&id=66%3Awoody&option=com_content&Itemid=41

Nesting occurs all year round but usually between November and March.
