Pukekos
« on: May 24, 2011, 11:33:20 AM »
What's the latest on deterring pukeko from pulling out new plants in urban areas where shooting is frowned upon?

We have heard:

1. stakes through the root ball
2. planting on an angle

Anyone know if any of these work? Or have anything to share would be much appreciated.

On Mana Island they use short lengths of novaflo pipe put in the ground a bit when planting the plant.  The pipes are then removed a few months later once the plants have settled in.  I've tried it around my place in high pukeko density rural Auckland and it works well - except the rabbits then bite the plant off just above the pipe top  >:(
