Hi All,
This is the annual call to update the Reintroduction Specialist Group (RSG) Oceania website, and is going out to everybody on my RSG Oceania email list. If you've never received one of these messages before, it means that I added you to the list in the last year. If you want to be removed, please let me know. If you are currently not a formal member of the RSG but think you should be, please let me know (if you don't know whether you are a member or not, I'll let you know...). Finally, if you know of somebody else who you think should be on my email list or become an RSG member, please let me know.
The RSG aims to facilitate communication among reintroduction practitioners, and for the last 11 years I have tried to do this by maintaining a website, which is now found at
http://rsg-oceania.squarespace.com/ and is maintained by Stuart Parsons from Auckland University (
s.parsons@auckland.ac.nz). I am no longer producing the annual newsletter. Please remember to check out the website as it has A LOT of useful information, thanks to the efforts of everybody who have contributed and collated the information. And...
IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT REINTRODUCTON IN OCEANIA THAT'S NOT SHOWN ON THE WEBSITE, PLEASE SEND IT TO STU ASAP!
Information on projects should take the form of a short paragraph giving the species, site, size and habitat of release site, type of translocation (i.e. reintroduction, introduction or supplementation), when release(s) took place, source population(s), translocation and release method, the reason for the translocation, any ongoing management or research accompanying the translocation, and a contact person. There are lots of examples on the website, and for NZ people, all you need to do is send the abstract of the Transfer Report and Monitoring Report (or combined report) that you should have submitted to DoC. Note that DoC also wants everybody to send me a copy of these abstracts, because the RSG Oceania website is the only place where the information is publicly available. There are several projects I know about that aren't shown on the site because I no longer have the time to chase up the information. Therefore, if you (or somebody else) doesn't send the information, it won't be publicly available.
The website can also be used to announce conferences, workshops, or anything relevant to reintroduction. So also send this sort of information to Stu, and if you want it emailed to everybody, send to me as well.
Cheers,
Doug
