Plan to bring your family with you.  There is a lot to see and do in Edmonton.  You can also explore the rest of Alberta or even Canada while you’re here! Below is a sampling of some of the fieldtrips planned.  For more complete fieldtrip information and suggestions for excursions, go to http://www.conbio.org/activities/meetings/2010/fieldtrip.cfm.

•   Multi-stop birding trip - see and hear several neotropical migrants that stop in Edmonton in July, as well as several species of breeding waterfowl
•   Elk Island National Park  - park biologists will explain the unique management challenges they face, and a guided hike will showcase the diverse habitat and rich birdlife of the area

Thursday and Friday, July 8-9:
•   Oil sands exploration - see Alberta’s oil sands first-hand and learn about the process by which bitumen containing sand becomes the fuel in your own gas tank and how that process affects local and global ecosystems
•   Royal Tyrrell Museum and Dinosaur Provincial Park - visit the world-famous Royal Tyrrell Museum, the only museum in Canada devoted entirely to palaeontology, and nearby Dinosaur Provincial Park, a World Heritage Site, which provides a spectacular example of "The Badlands" and remains a site of active excavations

Thursday to Saturday, July 8-10:
•   Mountain parks – Jasper, Banff, Icefield Parkway - learn about caribou management in Jasper, see water falls, exhibits and glaciers on the Parkway, hear about the world-famous highway mitigation in Banff and enjoy spectacular scenery throughout the trip (www.pc.gc.ca/progs/np-pn/index_e.asp).

Additional activities which occur during the Congress range from organized early morning birding walks to a canoe float trip or an excursion on the Edmonton Queen sternwheeler.  Directly south of the host venue, the Shaw Conference Centre, you have access to the longest stretch of urban parkland in North America, which is 22 times larger than New York’s Central Park and eight times larger than Vancouver’s Stanley Park.  You can spend many hours walking or hiking on the well-kept trails, enjoying some of Edmonton’s maximum 17 hours of daily daylight at that time of year.  For more Edmonton visitor information go to http://www.conbio.org/activities/meetings/2010/visitor/hostcity.cfm.

Social Activities
The Congress schedule also allows free time for you and your family to see some of the sights of Edmonton and enjoy the numerous restaurants, pubs, shopping and other amenities that is easily accessible from the Shaw Conference Centre.  You won’t want to miss the final official event of the Congress – a picnic in historic Fort Edmonton on Wednesday, July 7.  While there you can take in some history and enjoy a barbecued meal and entertainment to include a musical band made up of Alberta-based conservation biologists!  More information is available at the Program and Special Events tab on the Congress website:  www.conbio.org/2010
