Hi all,
I am trying to put a list together of people who breed Admirals or (want to) and can take extra caterpillars from those that either (1) run out of Nettles, so get hungry caterpillars or (2) are planning on removing Nettles.
So, if you have any Nettles & are thinking of removing or controling them, then please contact me on
Contact@nzButterfly.info, then either I can try to put you in contact with someone that will relocate the caterpillars & maybe remove the plants (this can be dependant on species & location as some regional councils care more then others for the introducted types) or I can advise of methods to reduce Nettles & help the caterpillars survive. Then you get to see more Butterflies at your place.
Bare in mind, if you're a person growing Nettles as a herb, the Caterpillars like the same part of the plant as we like for teas, remedies, etc.
More info & pictures on all Butterflies found in NZ is at;
http://nzbutterfly.info/species.htmThe overall aim is to get caterpillars that are due to be killed by spraying or removal (of Nettle) re-homed. I also aim to promote awareness amongst landowners that they can help our native Butterflies.
Presently here's the list by region & town of people that can take on Caterpillars & possibly Nettle plants, please add to this list if you can help too or know of patches of Nettle 'to watch' that get sprayed regularly.
