Auckland Conservation Biology Drinks
« on: January 31, 2012, 08:49:21 AM »
At the International Convention for Conservation Biology I noticed that many Auckland conservation biologists from a variety of organisations were taking the opportunity to catch up with each other.  Clearly there was an opportunity for an informal local forum for networking.  So I decided to try holding one.  Here it is:

Auckland Conservation Biology Drinks
An informal social networking opportunity, open to everyone in Auckland who provides conservation biology advice and services, to encourage communication and collaboration. Please feel free to circulate this invitation to ecologists, scientists, technical advisors who work in organisations in areas of natural heritage, biodiversity, biosecurity in Auckland.

When:  Tues 6 March 2012;  5 pm – 8 pm
Where:  Northern Steamship Company Macs Brewbar (cnr of Quay and Gore Sts, close to Britomart)
RSVP: to Alicia Warren (awarren[at]doc.govt.nz ) 1 week prior (Tues 28 Feb) so that sufficient tables can be reserved.

If this is a success we could consider holding one quarterly.  If you would like to be added to my email distribution list, please email a request to Alicia Warren.

The Auckland Conservation Biology Network is now a happening thing. Auckland Conservation Biology network is for people who provide professional conservation biology advice and services in Auckland. Its purpose is to encourage networking and collaboration between organisations working in conservation biology.  We intend to have 4 events a year for networking, mostly in central Auckland, mostly after-work drinks.  The email distribution list run by Alicia currently has over 100 members.  You can ask to be added to Alicia's email distribution list by emailing awarren (AT DOC).

We now also have a Facebook group (Auckland Conservation Biology Network) which in the first month already has over 40 members.  It's a closed group i.e. "Anyone can see the group. Only members see posts." Once you have a Facebook profile you can ask to become a member of this group if you work in the Auckland region.  See http://www.facebook.com/akldconservationbiology#!/groups/296696847070823/

If you become a member of the Facebook group you can use it to share with the group, i.e.
■ Post updates, questions, photos and more
■ Chat with the group
■ Create shared docs
■ Schedule group events
You can also:
■ Get notifications about new posts so you never miss an update
■ Connect off Facebook using the group's shared email address.

It's a simple way of contacting other conservation biologists in many organisations across Auckland.  It can  be used for advertising local events (eg meetings, seminars), asking questions requiring local or regional knowledge, finding others in the region with similar interests or concerns.  I put it together in the hope it will be useful to and used by all Conservation Biologists in Auckland.

Regards
Alicia
