Stitch photos together into panorama with Hugin
« on: April 13, 2008, 12:06:48 PM »
I've been on the lookout for good panorama photo software to do things like stitch photos of a shag colony together to count nests etc.  While there are several good commercial products available (Arcsoft panorama Maker 4 being my personal choice), I just found "Hugin" - a free, open source program that is rather good for a number of reasons.

  • It's free
  • It is downloadable as a zip file
  • Doesn't require installing - just run from a directory or even a memory stick

Check out http://hugin.sourceforge.net/  for download, instructions and tutorials.  For best results you also need to downlad a control point creator (matches up points automatically) and links to two free programs are provided.  I just copied everything into one directory for ease of finding.  When you run the program for thre first time (at least for V 0.7) it asks you where various components are located.  Point to them in your directory and it'll remember them thereafter.

Enjoy!

ArcSoft Panorama Maker - Panorama photo software
« Reply #1 on: February 02, 2009, 11:05:38 AM »
If you want a good easy to use commercial software product to stitch your photos together, try ArcSoft Panorama Maker.  It's about $US40, but is a good buy if like me you're into taking panorama images.

Here's an example result - made from 4 images.  Software can do horizontal, vertical, 360 or mosaic.
